#SummerJams

Super Hipster Edition.

This one's for the ladies; one of my favorite new bands in LA is a trio of sisters called Haim.  They're the best chick-band I've heard in a long time.  Still unsigned, they just released their first music video this morning (audio much better than video):

I've seen them 4 times in LA and had the pleasure of working with them when they opened for Portugal the Man at one of venues that I'm occasionally employed by: super humble, funny girls with a good appreciation for the art they're making and the fans they're gathering.  When I saw them in March, they had their parents (both musicians) come onstage and play a cover. In April, Ryan Adams did a guest spot.

They haven't gotten much radio play in the US yet, but they're on the charts in the UK and were Band of the Week  a few months ago in Vogue.  They received critical acclaim after appearing at South by Southwest in March.

And their EP is available for Free Download.  That's fucking sweet.

I first heard about them because the lead singer dates guitar-virtuoso Blake Mills (formerly of Dawes) and did a duet with him for the "Chimes of Freedom" album (a compilation of Bob Dylan covers that raised money for Amnesty International):

So check them out now, get on the bandwagon while they're still relatively unknown, and then you can sound like a hipster when they get signed and start popping up on traditional media.  Download their free EP: I promise they'll be stuck in your head instantly and leave you wanting more.

Early #SummerJam Prediction

Prepare to hear this song everywhere.

It was originally released independently two years ago, on an excellent LP called "I Want I Want!" which you can no longer get anywhere.  Why? Because they signed to RCA, and major record labels are pricks.  RCA has re-released "Anna Sun" on EP, with a full length forthcoming.

Also thanks to RCA, "Anna Sun" is now finding it's way onto major (read: Clear Channel) radio stations.  It's a shoo-in to be massively overplayed this summer, much like "Pumped Up Kicks" last year.

I don't really mind though.  I saw Walk the Moon live a few weeks ago in LA, and they tooootally rocked. Awesome live energy.  They paint their faces for shows (like in the video) and so do many of their fans (mostly cute girls).  I think that's kinda fun.  Just sayin'.

On a personal note, the lyrical content of the song reminds me fondly of our college party houses on Main St & Grey St, of Allen Court in Boston, and of HouseHouse, where I lived for my first year in LA.

I hope you all enjoy hearing this song a million times this summer, and I hope their new album still has some of their other awesome songs, like this one:

Nat'l Anthem Love

Ever since Whitney died the Star Spangled Banner has been getting some serious love. When Whitney sang the National Anthem at the Super Bowl in 1991 she definitively laid down the best vocal rendition of the National Anthem that has ever been heard and ever will be. Whitney sang the shit out of the song and made it seem easy. Seeing as to how Whitney totally owns the song vocally I wanted to see if I could find any other mind-blowing different and awesome renditions. I couldn't. The image of Whitney slaying every note was too much to overcome. Without further ado here is the Queen of America herself singing the song everyone has sung, only better.

And for something entirely different here is an acoustic version I also like.

My Master Plan

My Master Plan is to get Lady Gaga to release an album of Christina Aguilera's Greatest Hits. Hearing Lady Gaga's take on "Nobody Wants to be Lonely", "Dirrty", and "Not Myself Tonight"(just to really add insult to insults) would be absolutely amazing. "Candy Man" and "Beautiful" would be the shit too. Christina Aguilera has a whole bunch of great songs, I just wish that Lady Gaga could take over her whole catalog going forward.

My favorite Xtina song is "Nobody Wants to be Lonely"

Let's All Watch Dawson's Creek Together - Episode 8: The Boyfriend

So...picking up where HelloGiggles left off, I put my foot down about the fact that I cannot wait to watch the rest of Dawson's Creek and I also can't not blog about it. My beloved husband got me the beloved complete series DVDs and I hope you'll join me in my endeavor to finish the series...through blog.

Let the record show that I am and always have been a Pacer, not a Dawsoner. And that the profound effects of this show have echoed throughout my life. Though, like anything that comes out of the WB (what the hell is the CW?), I take its melodrama with a grain of salt. That being said...let's bang out Episode 9, shall we?

Dawson is watching TV alone in his room, unsure of what to settle on. He stumbles upon scrambled porn which makes him very confused.

He gives up and settles on American Movie Classics, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington...you know, like most 15 yr old boys would. Joey enters, stage window. She is complaining about how exhausted she is from Bessie's baby crying and being up all night trying to soothe him. It makes her scowl. Just look at what a good scowler she is.

So good. Dawson let's his Pal Joey sleepover at Leery Manor to catch some decent sleep. As she snoozes, he morphs into a 1950s mid-America mayor and laments about how you just can't find nice young men anymore.

The next morning he is about to go down to the kitchen (Joey ran away in the night?) where Mrs. Leery and Mr. Man Meat are eagerly calling him to PLEASE  break their AWKWARD breakfast up a bit, its PAINFUL. Sensing social danger, he hightails it outta there. They are left to silently damn him as they struggle for conversation over dramatic, intense 90210-style guitar riffs. These are adult problems, that need adult theme music.

Pacey is chilling out with The Old Man and The Sea before school, you know, like most 15 yr old boys would, when he almost gets run over while crossing the street. Who is this hooligan badass in a fancy 1990's convertible and leather jacket? Uncle Jessie? Joey Lawrence? Nope! Its WannaBe Paul Rudd! Jen's ex boyfriend from NY-where-sex-is-twice-as-fast!...or something.

Cut to the Potter residence (its a straight-up house, why do they always refer to it as a trailer??) where Joey can't artfully blowdry her hair because there's only one bathroom and Bodie is showering. Wait...BODIE IS SHOWERING?! Which Bodie?! Show us in the shower! If a bodysnatcher showers, do they undo the zipper in the back?!

In school, Dawson helps Joey study for her Spanish test ("La bicicleta de mio tio es muy bueno.") and he explains how his relationship with Jen is just peaches and cream.
This whole screenshot is the definition of foreshadowing.  And Jen actually compliments Dawson on that sweater. Really, Michelle Williams? Unnecessary.

Wannabe Paul Rudd, named Billy, sneaks onto a public school campus and steals an angry Jen away from 1st period so that she can explain how its over between them. Dawson and Cliff watch from afar and have a Stripy Sweater Pity Party.

No, but seriously, Cliff is having a BBQ at his place and wants Jen to attend.

The Leerys decide to reconnect by trying new activities together...hey, whatever staves off divorce, am I right? Ha! But why didn't it work, Mr. Man Meat? "Because I can't get the image of my wife playing Hide The..." PLEASE finish that sentence, Man Meat!!

Cut to Jen, outside with Dawson, begging him to let Wannabe Paul Rudd stay over at his house for the night because the 4 hour car ride from Boston-area to NY-area can only be done in sunlight, apparently. And apparently, Dawson's Creek was filmed in a world where two parents in the middle of a marital breakdown allow their son to have a PERFECT STRANGER gentlemen caller stay overnight. And just look at this guy...what a charmer. Wouldn't you want to be caught boinking him in your parents bed? He meets, then hangs with Dawson and asks, "What are you, some kind of film buff?" HEY. DAWSON. LOVES. MOVIES. OKAY?

After Billy starts spouting the gory details of what Jen was like in NY, Dawson covers his ears, starts yelling LALALALA, and runs over to Joey's where he complains about how horrible TERRIBLE his life is. Making Joey scowl. Dawson, don't you know that no one's life is harder than Joey's??

Look at the wrath she's about to unleash on him. Poor bastard.

Back at Leery Manor, Jen explains that Wannabe Paul Rudd's presence is making her confused about her feelings. Jen, don't you know that only Dawson can be confused about his feelings?? Dawson orders her to attend Cliff's BBQ party...because as his girlfriend she must!

At the video store, Joey is attempting to rent The English Patient because it puts Baby Alexander to sleep, but she's being thwarted by Pacey's silver-tongued truths. "You just can't wait to get your hooks into Dawson something good, can't ya?" Oh, Pacey, you always know how to cut to her heart.

Joey is getting overwhelmed at work ("picking the glass out of the ice machine, scraping the mung out of the Fry-O-Later", what the hell kind of restaurant IS The IceHouse?), but Pacey shows up to beg her to come to Cliff's BBQ so he won't go alone. I LOVE the extras in this scene, particularly the exasperation conveyed. If you watch this scene many times, you can hear the things the extras dub-shouted over this scene.

There's a great interlude scene where Mr. Man Meat confesses to Dawson that there are no definitive answers when it comes to love advice. Dawson is changing to go to the party and takes off his sweater to reveal underneath his hard, muscular...other sweater.

Billy and Jen talk about how she's leaving him for a guy with an ET doll. Shes promises him one last kiss if he will leave and we finally get to see how they do it in New York.

Back at Cliff's BBQ party, which looks like a Newport Slims ad, they're listening to Blink 182's Dammit, so you know its a real party. Also, I guess I blocked out the fact that men's ponytails were huge in the 90's. Pacey goes to hit on a girl and asks Joey how he looks. "Like the before picture in an ad for Geek Remover." Classic Joey. She catches Dawson who suggests they grab a drink and go to his studio (bedroom) to hang out. On the way to the apparent beer keg, Dawson sees Jen. She apologizes, and he completely forgets Joey.

Joey sees them walk away together towards the beach and starts flirting with Thor and drinking heavily.

Wannabe Paul Rudd didn't really leave (WHA?!) and confesses that his goodbye kiss to Jen was tittillating. Dawson calls her slut and then makes this face. Utter bonehead.

Jen storms off, flanked by Billy and Dawson, which marks the second time that she storms off with two dudes fighting over her just this season. Billy flees the beach. A drunk Joey and Thor are sucking face farther down the beach until Pacey breaks them up and punches Thor. Joey passes out and thanks Dawson, who she believes to be her saviour. Pacey rolls his eyes. We all do, Pace...we all do.

They bring Drunk Joey home, mumbling "Tartar sauce..table 5...coffee", and while Pacey tries to calm Baby Alexander, this happens:
He looks about as shocked as I did. On the way home, Dawson tells Pacey that they kissed and it was obviously nothing because she was drunk, right? Pacey attempts to explain that Joey loves him but Dawson won't hear it. Listen everyone, Pacey's had sex, okay, so he knows all there is to love.

Jen awaits Dawson on the pier, where she explains that she doesn't want to really date anyone right now, and that they should cool it. Technically, end it. Dawson prays to his magic leather-strap-stone-pendant to make the sadness stop, but he's done. Jen's final words: "'I'll miss you, you know."
 Oh you will Jen....you will.

Unfortunately, you cannot download the music for free. So, making CDs or playing it in your car is impossible. But, at your desk, at home - its all free.

EVERY Madonna album ever made? Make it a playlist.
Soundtracks from all 3 Twilight movies? Playlist.
ANY song that contains the word "Circus"? PLAYLIST!

My Favorite Poem

'Nothing Gold Can Stay' by Robert Frost is my favorite poem.

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leafs a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing Gold can stay.

In The Outsiders when Johhny and Ponyboy are looking at the sunrise out the back of the church they ran off too and Johnny says the mist is gold and silver and says that he wishes it could stay that way forever then Ponybody hits him with a "Nothing Gold can stay" and Johnny is like 'whats that?' then Ponyboy drops the whole poem on him to which Johnny replies "Thats what I meant", probably my favorite page of literature ever. I love that 'Nothing Gold Can Stay' so fucking beautifully can relate that even though you wish things could stay like this forever they can't.

AND this poem rhymes, no slant rhyme or maybe that rhymes, Eight lines Four couplets. And more then rhyming it rolls off the tongue if you recite it. I fucking love this poem, its my favorite.

What's your favorite poem?

How I Feel About Kid Rock

I like Kid Rock. You like Kid Rock. Because everyone likes Kid Rock. Because of the song "Picture". Everyone likes the song "Picture" by Kid Rock featuring Sheryl Crow. If you do not like the song "Picture" it is because you have not heard the song "Picture" by Kid Rock featuring Sheryl Crow. And if thats the case watch the video right down there. Otherwise I like his version of Feel Like Makin' Love better. "All Summer Long" is maybe the most listen-to-able song ever. "Born Free" is a good song. On the first episode of The Sheild when Vic shoots that guy and "Bawitdaba" is playing it was definately the most intense television I had seen at that point. Because of Kid Rock. I like Kid Rock. And so do you, probably, if not watch this video of "Picture" by Kid Rock featuring Sheryl Crow.

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

If you've taken Psych 100 and this is old news to you, I apologize. Last week, some article made an off hand reference to the Myers-Brigg Type Indicator assessment. Being an Senser (more on that later), I did some research. It's basically an assessment that measures psychological preferences in how people perceive the world and make decisions. And using a free online knock off version, I got results that kind of blew me away. Apparently it's the most widely used personality test in the world and I've been living under a rock.

Four days later, eight people were sitting around a kitchen table taking the test, sharing results and then reading the wikipedia page for each person's results. And we still haven't stopped talking about it.

So if you're interested, take the test here, and then you can go to wikipedia and put in your 4-letter results and get all sorts of information about it. And if you'd like to post your results in the comments, feel free. I've been speculating about everyone I know, and I'd love to know how my perception lines up with your results. So far only two people have had the same type.

Want more info? As an ESFJ (Provider), I'm happy to help. Read on!

The test is based on the idea of 4 pairs of dichotomies, or opposing psychological preferences, which makes for a possible 16 types. The terms have specific meanings to this test which may differ from their everyday usage.

Some of these descriptions are a bit judge-y, which is off-base, but I thought it was somewhat helpful as a visual.

 1. extraversion/introversion (E/I)
People who prefer extraversion draw energy from action: they tend to act, then reflect, then act further. Conversely, those who prefer introversion expend energy through action: they prefer to reflect, then act, then reflect again.

2. sensing/intuition (S/N)
Sensing and intuition are the information-gathering (perceiving) functions. They describe how new information is understood and interpreted. Individuals who prefer sensing are more likely to trust information that is in the present, tangible and concrete: that is, information that can be understood by the five senses. On the other hand, those who prefer intuition tend to trust information that is more abstract or theoretical, that can be associated with other information (either remembered or discovered by seeking a wider context or pattern)

3.thinking/feeling (T/F)

Thinking and feeling are the decision-making functions. Those who prefer thinking tend to decide things from a more detached standpoint, measuring the decision by what seems reasonable, logical, causal, consistent and matching a given set of rules. Those who prefer feeling tend to come to decisions by associating or empathizing with the situation, looking at it 'from the inside' and weighing the situation to achieve, on balance, the greatest harmony, consensus and fit, considering the needs of the people involved.

4. judgment/perception (J/P)
Judgment and perception reflect the implementation of the above preferences. Those who favor judgment prefer a planned or orderly way of life, like to have things settled and organized, feel more comfortable when decisions are made, and like to bring life under control as much as possible. Those who favor perception prefer a flexible and spontaneous way of life, and like to understand and adapt to the world rather than organize it.

Happy introspection!

Endangered Flying Rinos

I came across these pictures today and had to share. They look fake right? Apparently they're real, documenting the transportation of 19 critically-endangered black rhinos to a secret new location (away from poachers). They're sleeping, and this is supposed to be the most humane way of transporting the rhinos since they have to be tranquilized for a shorter period of time than they would in a truck.

Plus it's bad ass! I hope these guys like their new spot, Wikipedia tells me there are only around 4,000 black rhinos left in the world.

Arrested Development Movie is REALLY Happening, +10 new bonus eps

I'm not lying. What more of a source do you need than a tweet from Michael Bluth himself? Oh okay, here's an article that gives some more details. This has been rumored FOREVER but the idea of 10 eps leading up to the movie release is something new and I am so happy we're getting more than just a feature film out of the deal. I'm pretty sure there's no way this can suck, but I just knocked on wood for safety's sake.

The Dude Abides

Jeff Bridges is fast becoming my favorite actor. And....there it is. It just happened.

Mostly because he can play any character (the bad guy, the hero, the downtrodden) and be so diverse yet still be doing the exact same thing. And I love that thing. That he's still The Dude in every film, even when he's the bald bad guy in IronMan.

In every film I've ever seen him in, he still ends sentences with "man", gets frustrated with compound sentences, and is an overall slacker/drunkard/hippie who just wants everybody to be in a perfect utopia.

This clip explains EVERYTHING for me.
