On The Spot: Kobe

Celebrities  are always being interviewed. And asked a million questions and always being recorded. Its understandable that sometimes you might say something because it seems like the right thing to do at the time and its easy and it'll be funnyish. And then when you hear an interview of even a snippet or a soundbite and it dings in that deep forgotten part of your brain with all that stuff you know to be true and how to google it specifically so you can see it again. Anyhows, Kobe You're On The Spot.

Kobe was asked what he thought of Russell Westbrook's Style.

" its a generational thing. weird glasses, skinny jeans. I'm glad I wasn't growing up in this generation." -Kobe

When I heard that this is what ding'd in my brain.

All I had to do was Google "Kobe Pilgrim"

Manohar Aich

In 1952 at the age of 39 Manohar Aich won the Mr. Universe bodybuilding competition. Manohar Aich, who usually goes by "Great" as in "Great" Manohar Aich, was born on St. Pat's day in 1913. "Great" was born in a remote village and began his fitness career while recovering from an illness when he was 12. "Great" grew to have a 53 inch chest and an only 23 inch waist, V shaped to the extreme. "Great" is also only 4 feet 11 inches tall. "Great" won the Mr. Universe title in 1952 after having come in second the year before and continued to finish in the top 5 for years to come bringing him well into his 40s. After retiring from competition himself "Great" went on to open gyms and become a fitness personality in India. "Great" credits his longevity with living a stress free life, and never smoking cigarettes or drinking booze.  "Great" has never met Arnold Schwarzenegger.

No Punts Ever

Recently I was watching REAL Sports with Bryant Gumbel and there was a story about a High School football coach from Arkansas who has not Punted the ball since 2009. The Team has won the State Championship the last couple years to boot. The Team also almost always does an onside kick. In the story they annecdoted about the most recent State Championship game where The Team got 28 points before the other team got the ball by scoring on the opening drive and then doing and recovering the ball with three successive onside kicks. The REAL Sports story gets a mathematician involved to give some numbers about how The Coach is actually right and its a great segment. The Team has 11 or 12 different onside kick plays, good stuff.

In a similar but different situation this is a clip of a local news anchor doing the same story, he tries.

Fuck Joe Paterno

"The evil that men do lives after them.
The good is oft interred with their bones"
Julius Caesar Act 3 Scene 2

Joe Paterno was a really successful and incredibly long tenured football coach for Penn State. During his time at Penn State Joe Paterno donated over 4 million dollars to Penn State including helping to get the library which shares his name built. This aside, Fuck Joe Paterno. In 2002 Joe Paterno was informed that a staff member had been seen in Joe's own words "fondling or doing something of a sexual nature" to a ten year old boy. Joe Paterno heard this, slept on it, AND THEN THE NEXT DAY reported it to his superior and didn't do shit else. So Fuck Joe Paterno and Fuck anyone else who doesn't do all they can to make sure kids are safe from anyone who wants to hurt them. Joe Paterno will only be remembered for what he didn't do. Fuck him.

How I Feel About Hugh Jackman

I like Hugh Jackman. His appearance on Inside the Actors Studio where he explains how he learned to sing, the time that he nailed his face on a building because his zipline wouldn't stop, and swordfish make me like him. The Wolverine movie wasn't his fault, obviously they should have taken any time period from the amazing montage and made THAT movie instead of the Gambit is horribly miscast and why does Sabertooth look like that mess they made. Kate and Leopold is an amazing movie. Real Steel, it looks bad. I will not be seeing it until its on TBS on a Saturday early afternoon. Besides the best part of Real Steel already happened anyways. Hugh Jackman went on WWE RAW to promote it and punched a wrestler right in the face. The punch doesn't look like a standard wrestling punch, he doesn't stomp his foot at all, and it turns out he might have broke the wrestler's jaw.

The best part is that for his wrestling costume Hugh Jackman definitely went with what he was wearing plus a turquoise bandanna.

Usain Bolt DQs

In 2010 the rule on false starts in track were changed to a "one and done" rule. One false start and you are DQ'd. Usain Bolt jumped the gun today at the IAAF World Championships, you can see it at 1:05 real good, and ended his three year strangehold on the 100m dash. The IAAF will definitely have to change this before the Olympics. Let them try as many times as it takes to get Usain Bolt in the race, he is the best Olympics t.v. next to Michael Phelps.

The Civil Wars

This morning I was watching REAL Sports with Bryant Gumbel and when that was over I ended up at the VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown. I tried to remember the name of the VJ who did the Countdown when I was really watching it alot. Probs the summer of 2003ish. All I could remember was it sounded like "Aamer Alleem" Google was smart enough to tell me it was Aamer Haleem.

The song "Barton Hollow" by the Civil Wars, who I had never heard of and instantly respected because of the cool name, was number eleven on the Countdown. The song is awesome, totally more then enough reason to turn off the Countdown and attack YouTube and Wikipedia.

I found out that The Civil Wars are made up of Joy Williams and John Paul White. They got together in 2008 in Nashville. The band was featured on Grey's Anatomy in 2009 and has been on the rise for a while. I like how their videos are them in Jack White costumes, and I mean that in a good way I love Jack White.

This is the song that was featured on Grey's Anatomy "Poison and Wine"

And this is number eleven itself "Barton Hollow"

And this is "Falling Slowly" by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglovå because its amazing

Also, while I was watching REAL Sports with Bryant Gumbel I saw a story about Ann Wolfe who is known for delivering what might be the most devastating knockout punch ever.

Football Trickster

I always liked watching trick shots in billiards and soccer. You may have already seen this video which has gone viral over the last few weeks, but this guy is ridiculous at throwing a football.

He's a second string quarterback from UConn. The first string guy had better be the next Marino.

The Patriots Honor Tedy Bruschi

Last night during the Patriots epic win over the New York Jets ESPN, for some reason, didn't air the half time ceremony honoring one of their own broadcasters, Tedy Bruschi, for his 13 amazing seasons as a New England Patriot. THANKFULLY Patriots.com posted the entire ceremony for your viewing pleasure and you can see it here.

Personally I thought Bruschi was completely humbled by the entire experience and looked like he was on the verge of tears a couple times. Bruschi took the high road during his speech, choosing to highlight the coach and other players of those championship teams instead of himself, proving once and for all that he truly is one classy dude!

For those who don't know Tedy Bruschi helped the Patriots win three Super Bowl Championships in his tenure despite suffering a stroke in 2005.  Basically he's a badass, a class act, a family man, and a total cutie! If John Gruden ever decides to coach again Bruschi's got my vote to replace him on Monday Night Football!
