My Drunk Kitchen with Hannah Hart

This is a phenomena that I have known about for a few months but have never seriously watched until last night, when I watched all of the videos I could find.

Hannah Hart is the hostess of a Youtube channel called My Drunk Kitchen, wherein she gets drizzled and then cooks things. Making jokes along the way and usually dropping the ingredients, Ms. Hart is a pinnacle of American culinary majesty. I hope you enjoy these three examples.

"Vodka Latkes!"

"Some people only like to have egg whites in your omelette, and...that's a good way to make your omelette...shitty."

"Here's a drunk kitchen fact. Here's a drunk kitchen fact. Here's a drunk kitchen tip. What's the different between a fact and a tip?"

Chicken and Dumpling Soup for the Soul

This soup recipe is amazing. Just make it.

Chicken and Dumpling Soup

Ingredients:
2 32-oz. containers chicken stock
¼ cup olive oil
1 large white onion, chopped
2 ½ cups chopped carrots
2 garlic cloves, minced (or 1 tablespoon pre-minced garlic)
2 cups chopped celery
2 pounds chicken breast (or whatever cut you like)
Salt and pepper
1 can Pillsbury Buttermilk Biscuits
1 small bag/bundle fresh spinach, (optional, highly recommended)
Parsley (also optional)

Directions:

1.     Prep: Chop onions, carrots, and celery. Mince garlic. Trim chicken of fat, leaving the cuts whole.
2.     Pour chicken broth into a large pot and bring to a boil over medium high heat.
3.     Heat oil in a pan over medium high heat. Add the onions, carrots, and garlic and sautĂ© until onions start to brown, about 5 minutes. Drain.
4.    When the broth begins to boil add the onion mixture to the pot, along with the celery and chicken.
5.    Season with salt, pepper, and any other spices you like (Italian seasoning works well).
6.    Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes.
7.   Separate the dough by the perforated lines. Cut each piece into quarters.
8.    After 20 minutes, remove the chicken and cut it up into bite-sized pieces. Add the chicken back into the broth and bring the heat up to medium.
9.    When the soup is simmering, add the dough to the pot. Simmer uncovered for 10 minutes.
10. Wash the spinach and remove stems.
11.  After 10 minutes add the spinach, stirring the pot so the leaves get under the dumplings.
12.  Cover and simmer for 10 minutes more.
13.   Remove from heat and sprinkle with parsley if you’d like.

Home Made Hot Pockets

I love Meatball & Mozzerella and Ham & Cheese Hot Pockets. I remember back in the day KV bought a big box of the Meatball & Mozzerella that he was planning on stretching out and having for breakfast for the next long period of time, this was a BJ's size box, and I took advantage of there being something quick and delicious in my moms kitchen for the first time ever and promptly ate them all in a glorious fatty fat kid weekend. THEN I had a Hot Pocket fresh out the Toaster Oven and it was like "Hello World, nice to meet you" crispy flaky outside and all Hot and Ham & Cheesy inside. Ideally when trying to speed cook a Hot Pocket while still having it taste as delicious as possible, obviously, you want to microwave the Hot Pocket for about a minute and then take it to the Toaster Oven and toast it on the more than medium brown setting. It'll be life affirming. OR you can made your own Home Made Hot Pockets using this recipe.

Ingredients:
1 Package of Croissants
8 Slices of Ham
8 Slices of American Cheese

Steps:
-Preheat your oven to 350
-Open the Croissants
-Separate the Croissants
-Roll each of the Croissants with 1 piece of Ham and 1 piece of American Cheese
-Allow oven to come to temperature
-Place Rolled Croissants into an ungreased baking pan
-Bake for 18 minutes

Extreme Sushi

Do you like sushi? I do
I really like my sushi served on a miniature wooden boat

Some people can't deal with eating raw fish and go for the cucumber roll. I think that's pussy. I just giggled at myself for typing that out loud. If you think you like sushi and you only eat cucumber and imitation crab meat then whatever. I can't wait any longer-this is the most frightening thing I've seen all day.

What you're looking at here is a full on dead squid that zombies out when you pour apparently evil soy sauce on it. #THATSHITAINTRIGHT

Soy sauce hasn't been so lethal since it made ROW get nine stitches in his toe. I suggest we all move underground and start a safer society there Hunger Games style before theses creepy squid bastards get too out of hand.

Say hello to the food plate

Time to say goodbye to one more thing you learned in kindergarten. The once mighty Food Pyramid now resides on the Island of Discarded Facts, on the same street as Pluto the planet.

Nostalgia aside, the new model makes a lot more sense and puts the information much more clearly.

See for yourself:

The website also has interactive tools and stuff, but nothing that sweet.

Sourcemap: Fascinating and Slightly Unsettling

Sourcemap is all about helping people find out where products come from, and what exactly they contain.

You can browse existing sourcemaps or create your own. Maps also display a given product’s carbon footprint… which is a cool feature, but personally I have NO idea what 0.14 kg CO2e for a bottle of Fiji water means. Relatively good? Bad?

But the site is definitely worth checking out. It’s pretty interesting to see exactly what you’re consuming when snacking on an AriZona Arnold Palmer Iced Tea and some Oreos. It slightly horrified me to find out that my favorite 99¢ beverage is sweetened using Splenda, and that Oreo cookies are manufactured in Indonesia using palm oil from Malaysia.

Sourcemap also breaks down an iPhone 3GS and Domino’s Pizza

The Perfect Pour

The Verizon Center in Washington D.C., home to the Washington Wizards & Capitals, has recently added the coolest feature to their concession stands. The "Bottom's Up Draft Beer Dispensing System" pours a beer 9X faster than conventional pouring, and doesn't spill or foam up. How does it work? Magnets.

Bourdain in Boston

Promo image for Tony's Boston webcast
Anthony Bourdain is one of my favorites, so I was super excited when I heard he would be filming a Boston episode of his Travel Channel show No Reservations all this week.

Thankfully he also took over his show's Twitter account this week so I've been able to read Tony's personal account of his time in Boston. Bourdain is a native New Yorker, but he apparently loves Boston, especially Southie (shout out Ev & Meg!). Here are some of his more entertaining tweets:

"Grinder at Rondo's followed by Murphy's Law, L Street and the magnificent Quencher. I feel skull- fucked."
"After malpractice by "Dr. McGillicutty", Ruffino and I needed brain food. Belle Isle for seafood. Situation improved."
"Candlepin bowling in Southie. While getting hooted at by scores of Sox fans. Bad for the concentration. Outcome uncertain."

Tony also did a live webcast on Wednesday from the aforementioned Rondo's which was broadcasted on his Facebook account. He answered questions posted by fans, and the best was his response to the question "What's the best cure for a hangover?" to which Tony replied:

"Asprin, a joint, and spicy food. Oh and coke. Coca Cola."

Word. Can't wait to see the show!

Shakshuka is Hebrew for Delicious

Okay so that's not true. Shakshuka is a Middle Eastern dish and no one's really sure where it originated (some say Tunisia, others Israel). All that matters is it's super tasty, quick, easy, and cheap to prepare.

Check out the recipe. I ate it with warm naan and it was perfection. -id

Thanks Alton Brown, you rock.

Alton Brown used to really annoy me. Can't really tell you why.. I just found his cooking show on the Food Network to be boring, and thought his little jokes and skits on the show were seriously lame.

I am now a total convert because you guys.. his recipes are AMAZING! I made his Curry Chicken Pot Pie a few weeks ago and it was the best pot pie I've ever had.

Last night for the Pats/Steelers game I made his Hot Spinach/Artichoke Dip and it was soooo delicious, easy & cheap.

So if you're looking for cooking inspiration, browse his 100 Top Rated Recipes at FoodNetwork.com. I promise you won't be disappointed.

(Except maybe skip his baking stuff.)
(I like his show now-- he's just a food nerd.)

Bananas Need Protection Too

I don't think there is a more phallic every-day-edible than a banana. I bring bananas to work for lunch on a regular basis and it never fails to generate amusement with the co-workers. Yesterday my banana happened to be brown, which brought on a flood of sexual preference jokes. It probably doesn't help that I have a banana case. YES that's right. My friend gave me a plastic case in the shape of a banana. Amazingly enough, it actually fits most bananas! Of course when I go shopping for my bunches of bananas I know what size and curvature to look for to best fit the case. I had never heard of a banana case before, but it really is pure genius. I remember in college I would try taking bananas from the dining hall so I could eat it later in the day, but as soon as I threw it in my bag with books it would turn brown and nasty and get squished to the point that Jill would wanna VOM. Enter: The Banana Case. Now I have no problem with throwing my banana around (heh heh heh) because the hard shell protects it. I decided to google search the banana case to see what kind of options were out there and I stumbled across the banana bunker, which straight up looks like a condom. SERIOUSLY.... that is a hard plastic condom. But it works like a charm. It is flexible yet durable to change in lengh and curvature all while maintaining the health of the banana. Watch the how to and durability videos to see what I mean.

ITS A BANANA CONDOM
