Katy Perry Rocks Right Now and Pop Makes a Comeback

Not that I lost any faith in pop music but driving two hours a day to the same Rhianna and Pitbull songs does make you go a little crazy sometimes. I have been known to hate on Katy Perry-MAINLY because that song California Girls is pure awfulness.

1) The Beach Boys already made a song about California girls and it was way better
2) Aqua and the band that sang I'm Blue Dab a Dee in the 90's don't make music like that or at all anymore. For a reason.
3) Don't be a bad ass and come out saying how you kiss girls and then turn around and pull some bubble gum pop bullshit that Britney put on "Baby One More Time.." as a filler. If I wanted to listen to that I'd just pull up Soda Pop and be done with it.

Besides that one slip up though I do love most of Katy Perry's songs. They don't sound like Lady Gaga, Rhianna, or Britney and she's slightly more bad ass without being crazy in general, crazy because Chris Brown beat you up, or crazy because everyone in the media follows you around and sometimes you shave your head and beat cars up with umbrellas.

Her new single E.T. is pretty great. It sounds like that T.A.T.U song that came out back in the day except instead about lesbians its about Aliens. Entertainment weekly wants us to believe that it wouldn't have been a single if not for Kanye's verses on it BUT I come to Katy's defense in this one. The song is awesome and so is the video. She has a way of making her music sounds more complex than typical female pop singers even if it is about doing it with your alien boyfriend. Of course Kanye jumped on this track! You think he's gonna miss an opportunity to rap about having sex with someone not human? No chance! Kanye definitely makes the song more awesome because I mean. He's Kanye. But we all knew that. Katy holds her own in this one though and I think that even without Kanye this song would rock.

Check it out and see what you think

jmn

ps. everyone should definitely check out Britney's new cd. I think it's super fun.

the X factor

I was introduced to this new French tv show during my visit to France this past week, and I'm  obsessed with it. X-factor originated in the UK as a take-off from American Idol, and now there's X-factor shows happening all over the world. I hated American Idol, but I love this because not only are the judges awesome (and not out of control brutal), but there are also actually a bunch of good singers each show. There are of course also others who are ridiculous and try to sing songs in English with the thickest French accents possible. The first three episodes are open auditions, and the top 140 get to move onto the second round in Paris.
the judges: Olivier Schultheis, Christophe Willem, Véronic DiCaire (Québecois), Henry Padovani (original guitarist for the Police)
Here's a clip from the second episode of the audition of one of my favorite contestants, Florian Giustiniani. For the non-French speakers, to sum up, he's 19, he wants to be a musician and right now he's at university and doing side jobs like being a pizza maker. (There's a special french word for "pizza maker", which is cute). His biggest fan is his grandpa, and the judges make fun of him for looking like Justin Bieber. My fav part after he sings is when Véronic (who looks like Meg Ryan) asks him how old he is, and then freaks out all over the place at his being only 19.

blogger isn't letting me find the youtube video, so click here to watch it

The judge in the blue shirt reminds me of towers, anyone else see it?

I'm not sure if the website will let you watch the full episodes in the USA, but try. Episodes are up the morning after, I think it airs on Tuesdays. here's the website with all of the episodes

and after tweeting a few times with edzachery's twitter account I've caved and made my own. I've found some of you already, check it: yoluceface.

3eanuts: The Peanuts gang gets nuttier

Charlie and the rest of the Peanuts gang are the subject of a Tumblr that's blowing up right now. Heralded as the Peanuts answer to the excellent Garfield minus Garfield, 3eanuts presents classic Peanuts four frame comics with the final frame, and resolution, left off. The result is the neuroses are never resolved and they gang is more messed up than ever. That is unless you've read Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead, an unauthorized dramatization of the peanuts gang, now in high school and all totally teenage angsty, druggy, and bi-curious (Thanks JBB, for messing up the Peanuts forever for me).

Here's a gem of 3eanuts to whet your appetite.

No New Mad Men till 2012. FUCK.

I'm so pissed! Mad Men season 5 won't air until "early 2012" because of negotiations between AMC, Lionsgate, & show runner Matt Weiner. It was originally scheduled to return this summer.

It's all about money. Such a pity. I finally caught up on Mad Men last fall, just as season 4 was coming to a close. I still haven't watched an episode live... and now we have to wait another year. Boo. But props to JMN & Twitter for bringing this to my attention seconds after the news was released.

While at Sea, We Planned a Robbery

During the long-ass stretch of time we spent at sea crossing the Pacific Ocean during the end of Semester at Sea, my friends and I started to go stir crazy. My roommate Coretta came up with the idea for a "Let's Plan A Robbery" (Three 6 Mafia) music video, and we ended up shooting it all on my Cannon digital camera between the hours of 1 and 4am one night while everyone else on the ship was asleep. Our friend edited it on a bootleg version of Final Cut Pro, and this is the result.

Coretta and a bunch of others from this video were visiting us in Boston this weekend, so I wanted to (re)share it with y'all. I look totally gangsta -- please ignore the Yankees hat I'm wearing, it was all for show.

Body Of Proof Premiere

This Tuesday, March 29, 2011, yourself, your friends, and everyone you know and their mothers, should be watching ABC at 10 p.m. Or you will surely miss out on the American premiere of what critics are saying will be the new Grey's Anatomy, "Body of Proof". The show is sort of a combination of Grey's Anatomy and House, with a police procedural background, and a great cast.

Not to mention I worked on it, and Episode 8 will be Mary Fegreus'(Mary Mary Mary) world television premiere. So now you all should be personally invested.

BE THERE!

Ignore the promo that says Fridays this fall. Don't forget, get those ratings up Tuesday, March 29th at 10 PM on ABC!

Inside the EdZachery Studio

Inside the Actor's Studio is totally awesome. James Lipton does extensive research on his guests and then does all he can to make them sing and dance while discussing their major roles and careers.

At the end of each interview he asks the same 10 questions. These questions are inspired by Bernard Pivot, a french television personality. (When James Lipton was interviewed by Dave Chappell for the 200th episode, we found out that James lived in France and was a pimp in his youth, baller). Pivot in turn took them from the Proust Questionnaire, which is basically the first incarnation of that chain email with all the questions your supposed to answer and send to all your friends. Pivot realized that the questions could reveal aspects of both the work and personality of his interviewees and asked it of all his guests, as Lipton continues to do.

So let's do it. Here are the ten questions. You don't have to explain yourself, or justify anything, though you may. Don't think too long. And enjoy this clip of Robert Downey Jr answering the questions:

What is your favorite word?

What is your least favorite word?

What turns you on?

What turns you off?

What sound or noise do you love?

What sound or noise do you hate?

What is your favorite curse word?

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

What profession would you not like to do?

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?

Huckleberry Finn: The Hipster Edition

As you all know, much controversy has been had over the creation of a censored Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Now, it seems as if the controversy has shifted from the removal of the n-word to the replacement of the n-word with the word "hipster." It is all the talk at the lunch tables of Westford Academy. Fights have broken out, books have been burned, it's quite distressing.

av originally told me about it, but I found a way to download the whole book for free so you can enjoy or detest the alterations with all your heart.

I just wanted to share some great examples of the changes Richard Grayson has instituted in his rehashing of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Jim was monstrous proud about it, and he got so he wouldn't hardly notice the other hipsters. Hipsters would come miles to hear Jim tell about it, and he was more looked up to than any hipster in that country. Strange hipsters would stand with their mouths open and look him all over, same as if he was a wonder. Hipsters is always talking about witches in the dark by the kitchen fire; but whenever one was talking and letting on to know all about such things, Jim would happen in and say, "Hm! What you know 'bout witches?" and that hipster was corked up and had to take a back seat.(13)

Tom Sawyer a HIPSTER-STEALER!(293)

So they went off a-jawing; and I felt dreadful glad I'd worked it all off on to the hipsters, and yet hadn't done the hipsters no harm by it.(244)

"Yes. You know that one-laigged hipster dat b'longs to old Misto Bradish? Well, he sot up a bank, en say anybody dat put in a dollar would git fo' dollars mo' at de en' er de year. Well, all de hipsters went in, but dey didn't have much. I wuz de on'y one dat had much. So I stuck out for mo' dan fo' dollars, en I said 'f I didn' git it I'd start a bank . Well, o' course dat hipster want' to keep me out er de business, bekase he says dey warn't business 'nough for two banks, so he say I could put in my five dollars en he pay me thirty- five at de en' er de year.(61)

And behind the woman comes a little hipster girl and two little hipster boys without anything on but tow-linen shirts, and they hung on to their mother's gown, and peeped out from behind her at me, bashful, the way they always do.(287)

In the morning we was up at break of day, and down to the hipster cabins to pet the dogs and make friends with the hipster that fed Jim—if it WAS Jim that was being fed. The hipsters was just getting through and starting for the fields; and Jim's hipster was piling up a tin pan with bread and meat and things; and whilst the others was leaving, the key come from the house.(307)

"I wouldn't shake my HIPSTER, would I?—the only hipster I had in the world, and the only property."(283)

Those are only a handful. Props to av for informing me of this.

Pizza Face, Mr. Potato Head, WTF

Being a little kid is so awesome. There are whole superstores dedicated to selling different things that you can play with. There is a WHOLE AISLE of Barbie's in Toy's R Us. If you watch the Nickelodeon during the day you will see 300 hundred ads for different cracked out kids toys.

There are also TONS of shows for you. Barney, Blues Clues, Dora the Explorer, Rugrats, etc. If there were as many great shows on tv for us adults(?) now as there were great shows when we were kids I'd never leave the couch.

Who remembers these guys?

Earboy and PIZZA FACE!-A little creepy, but mostly funny and hilarious.

                                                  Mr. Potato Head. So lovable.

I was getting my daily dose of two gay men saying hilarious stuff about celebrity gossip on D-listed  and found an example of how kids shows can go wrong. Kids in Australia are apparently being robbed of Barney and instead given this crazy substitute. Sure we can take off all of Mr Potato Head's body parts but we ALWAYS put them back! otherwise he's just a potato. and no one wants to play with a potato person with no person characteristics. And that is where these Aussies went terribly, terribly wrong.

What the HELL! What psychos thought trapping a baby in wet clay and suffocating it so that you couldn't see any of its features was a good idea?! Yes Australian little girl accents are cute but there is a limit. And WHY does that plant in the lobby have an eyeball? Someone needs to ship off the copyrights to Eureka's Castle to the children of Australia because I'm seriously worried about them. And now I'm going to have nightmares.

How great does Bruce Willis look naked?

Parks and Rec, Party Down, Boy Meets World - The Adam Scott Triumvirate

You should be watching Parks and Recreation. The first season started rocky, but by the end it was awesome. The second season was all genius and the third season just started and is better than ever. The first and second season are all on Netflix instant watch and the third season is on demand right now.

Also streaming on Netflix is the complete series of Party Down, a show about a crappy catering company in LA made up of writers, actors and comedians trying to pay the bills and get their big break. So funny.

What do these two excellent shows have in common? Adam Scott. A terrific actor that I took an instant liking to. He has great facial expressions, like a shorter, more cynical Jim Halpert.

Today I figured out why I liked him right away. He was briefly on Boy MeetsWorld as super babe Griff Hawkins. Someone has kindly gathered his whole storyline into two youtube videos. Here's the first:

when asked about his role on Boy Meets World he said, "That was one of my first jobs too, but it's weird because at the time, Boy Meets World was a show for children, a show for 11-year-old girls. So it's not like it had any real meaning. It was a job I had. I made friends with a couple of people on the show. No one I knew watched it or even knew what it was...At the time, it was like being on a cartoon at 6 in the morning on a Saturday. It had no significance whatsoever. For me, it was exciting because it was a job on a TV show, but as far as a career thing, it was meaningless"

As a former 11 year old girl, I feel qualified to say, it meant a lot to us.

av

Netflix's big Move

I think Netflix just made itself a tv channel.
Vulture said that Netflix bought Kevin Spacey's new show.
Netflix beat out HBO and AMC.
The coolest part of this is the possibility of being able to pick individual cable channels.
Instead of a package that has plenty nobody is watching.
What five channels would you pick?
I'd go with FX, ESPN, Spike, HBO, and E!

Also, did y'all hear "Seann William Scott has voluntarily admitted himself for proactive treatment to address health and personal issues," as said by his rep. I like him; "Dude, where's my car?" Hope he gets better soon.

N*SYNC Doing That Thing You Do

Don't ask me how I came upon this... but here is N*SYNC performing the title song from the (awesome) '96 movie That Thing You Do!

I found this especially amusing  because:

  • They're playing instruments!
  • Lance is playing the keyboard.
  • Justin is shunned to the back of the stage by Joey's drum set.
  • They're wearing baggy velveteen pants.
  • That Chris guy with the dreads looks AWFUL. Why was he allowed in?

This was really just an excuse to post this urgent celebrity gossip:

Rock puts on his dancing shoes

I love music videos. And I believe in them. I'm a sucker for a dance sequence. LadyGaga, Beyonce and Britney Spears are the champions of this type of music video. But there are a quite a few terrific dance videos from artists you might not expect. The Fatboy Slim video for Weapon of Choice, featuring the ever amazing Christopher Walken, is well known. Bjork's "It's Oh So Quiet" is a personal fav, that you should defs check out.

But both of these are several years old.

Recently however, some rock bands have been getting into the dance video act. First Radiohead's video for "Lotus Flower" is basically Thom Yorke tweaking out for five minutes. I think my favorite move is when he's all twisted over himself and he claps along.

Now R.E.M. has comissioned three music videos, two forthcoming are to be directed by the ever present James Franco. But this first one is directed by Sam Taylor Wood and stars Aaron Johnson, of  KickAss and Nowhere Boy (also directed by Wood, who is now his wife and baby mama). Johnson dances through the streets, somewhat strangely. A lot of moves you'd expected from a five year old girl, but also some dsplays of strength and daring in the way he interacts with the environment. Please to enjoy:

Keep the awesome music videos coming, world

Poe Classic Bookcovers Reimagined

My friend Rich Stewart, a graphic designer I worked with at Everest Poker, has been doing some amazing freelance work since the two of us got laid off in November.

All the projects are great, but my favorite is this Poe series, where he redesigned the book covers of five of Poe's most well-known works. Check them out on his Behance portfolio, and click "Appreciate" at the bottom if you feel so inclined. "The Pit and the Pendulum" one is really cool.

Rich's specialty is typography/type treatment, which means he's really good at choosing the right font to communicate the "feeling" of a brand. Good examples: local Allston/Brookline favorites Fast Eddie's Barber Shop, Rat City Beer Co., & Zaftigs Delicatessen.

I really wish I could make stuff like that in Photoshop. Damn.
-id

p.s. the photography of these projects was done by another former coworker: Reid Haithcock, of Alice & Johnny's Wedding fame. He was the AMAZING photographer hanging around all day taking color and black & white pictures. He has a Behance portfolio too.

Guys, we're in trouble!

Let's say a beautiful woman is walking down the street, naturally, she draws a certain level of your attention, and though you want to check out what she's working with, you know you can't just drop your jaw and start cat calling her like your working construction, you gotta be sly, you gotta be slick, you wanna make sure she doesn't notice you noticing her, right!?!? So you wait for her to pass, then all of a sudden you have that uncontrollable urge to try and bite your own shoulder, and lo and behold, the goods!

This is pretty much "checking out a girl 101," and every guy on earth has spent his formidable years perfecting his "move" that will optimize viewership while minimize being caught. The only reason this works is because every guy is absolutely certain that his "move" is so good that it can't ever be detected by anyone in his surroundings, especially the object of his affection.

Well, this video pretty much exposes us for the dogs that we truly are, the only good news in all this is that it seems girls are just as guilty...

i heart strangers

I've been really getting into reading blogs this semester. My Vienna blog is my pilot experience...and so far I have been loving writing it. But now, I find that I not only love blogging myself, but reading others and finding new ones. This could partly be because it takes me a long time to drink my huge cup of coffee in the morning, and I don't like reading the news for more than 10 minutes.

i just happened upon this dude who is an amazing photographer (I have been in a photography kick for like a month now). He's an artist from copenhagen who has been traveling all over the world the past couple of years. I'm going to copy and paste his explanation about the blog entitled "i heart strangers" below, because I love it.

"hi there. my name is joshua langlais. i've got a thing for people. and i've got another thing for photography. so i am working on ways to combine the two in a worthwhile way. you can see my current and previous projects on here. the first is called "i heart strangers" - my attempt at loving my neighbors. every single day, i went out into the world to seek out someone i had never before met. i introduced myself and asked them if i could photograph them. i took something valuable away from every encounter and did my best to pass that along to you. i started this on september 8, 2008, with the intention of doing it for a year, but i did it for a year and then decided to continue. i eventually stopped after 625 days. you will also see "joshualanglais.com", which is my attempt to make beautiful photographs of some of the people who don't necessarily qualify as strangers. this is my professional website, a place to see what i am made of, if you will. pass the word along because i want everyone to meet my strangers and friends."

He actually has stopped the strangers project, as of last may, but he has over 600 posts, but I am still excited to catch up on it. He is still posting on his other blog, and that one has some amazing photography as well:  http://www.joshualanglais.com/. I vote if we like it, we should add it to "blogs we like" or whatever on the side.

peace and love.

Disney Magic (2 of 2)

So ID revealed that one other picture had also been released in the Disney series of photographs by Annie Leibovitz.

And this one is probably my favorite.

Julianne Moore as Ariel, and Michael Phelps (and other extremely famous swimmers) as Merpeople.

People said on set, Julianne Moore's daughter ran up and sat in her lap and starting crying because she couldn't believe her mother was Ariel, her favorite princess. Then everyone started crying.

Imagine how fast Phelps could swim if he just always wore this. DAMN.

Next, I hope she does a Toy Story set with Tim Allen and Tom Hanks as Buzz and Woody.
Lucy Liu as Mulan might be coming soon too.

New Shoes

Hey guys!

I just made some new shoes (I make a new pair like every 6 months) and I'm so excited about them that I wanted to share them with y'all, because you're a lot of artsy craftsy people.

White cheap shoes from H&M, this time with stabilo pens (I usually do sharpie, will have to be more careful about getting caught in the rain in these). The quotes come from an e.e. cummings poem, "somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond/any experience" and "nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands".

it's raining on the sunflowers. just fyi.
that's the emerald city to your left.

first day wearing them today!! (it's already late morning in Vienna)
the first day is always good luck, i like to think.

also, the procrastination of 2 huge papers has led med to discover that you can not only take pictures with photobooth on mac os, but also VIDEOS. i just recorded all of the songs i've been playing recently and have been uploading them to youtube, even though i make mistakes, the sound quality is shitty, and i've had a cold for a month.5 now. if you miss me, check them out! i guarantee either smiles or the satisfaction of knowing you could probably record a better video than me will be your reward.

one of the happiest songs in the world

also, straightened hair is so soft. i forgot that.

peace and love.

Disney Magic

Working in Disney World gives you this immense feeling of being included in a magical world. Seeing behind the scenes somewhat changes how you see that world, but little things remind you.

The biggest reminder I always have are these sets of photos Annie Leibovitz has been slowly releasing for the last four years. These Disney ads still confirm that she is one of the best photographers in ever history.

Rachel Weisz as Snow White.

Scarlett Johansson as Cinderella

Roger Federer as King Arthur

Julie Andrews and Abigail Breslin as Fairies from Pinocchio

Beyonce as Alice, Oliver Platt as the Mad Hatter, and Lyle Lovett as the March Hare

David Beckham as Prince Phillip

Jessica Biel as Pocahontas

Jennifer Lopez and Mark Anthony (when they were dating) as Jasmine and Aladdin

Whoopi Goldberg as the Genie

Gisele Bundchen as Wendy, and Mikhail Baryshnikov (the director of the American Ballet Theater in NYC) as Peter Pan. And if you zoom in....

.....Tina Fey as Tinker Bell.

Olivia Wilde as the Evil Queen, and Alec Baldwin as the Magic Mirror

Jeff Bridges and Penelope Cruz as Beauty and the Beast

Queen Latifah as Ursula

I can't wait to see who she chooses for Ariel. Christina Hendricks maybe?
