Superman is a babe, and a Brit.

In the year of super hero reboots, there has been some speculation about who will be cast as the new superman. Many people called for Jon Hamm, though the actor said throughout that he is too old to be Clark Kent.

It was announced today that Henry Cavill has been cast as Superman.

You may have never heard of him. He played Henry VIII's bff in the excellent series, The Tudors, which you should definitely check out. Also in the past few years he has narrowly missed several high profile parts. He lost on Batman to Christian Bale, Bond to Daniel Craig (too young), Twilight author Stephanie Meyer named him as her first choice for Edward Cullen (too old), and was a front runner for Superman the last time around when it went to Brandon Routh.

Add Cavill to a story by Christopher Nolan and screenplay from the writer for Batman Begins and there's a good chance this movie is going to be sweet.

Also catch Cavill in Immortals,  Greek myth epic coming this fall. He worked out for this one:

The Only Way to Travel

Before I read any of these posts I always scroll down and see who is writing it so I can have their voice in my head as I read, if you are the same way let me save you .3 seconds by saying this is a BJK post, so without further ado....

Just like any blue blooded American, I'm unemployed, and spend my days scouring craigslist for any signs of a job. I started out with specific searches that played towards my strengths, past work experiences, and location. But these days I pretty much open up the jobs page and just start scrolling. This might explain why some of you periodically receive emails with craigslist links from me (Izzy, saw a copyrighting one today but it didn't seem like a good fit, lots of computer tech mumbo jumbo)

But the one that I want to bring to everyones attention can be found right HERE. A company called Walking Tree Travel is seeking out college graduates to travel to foreign countries with high school students as a tour guide/ chaperone type person. They not only pay for your travel expenses but they also pay YOU! The only hang up (and the main reason I think I'm out of the running) is they want you to be able to speak the language of the country your visiting pretty fluently, they also like people who have travelled extensively.

If anyone is interested you can apply online; if you click on this link.

annnd because posts without pictures aren't any fun, I think this looks really cool,

'The Office" Hires Ron Burgundy

This season of The Office will be the last for Steve Carell, and Will Ferrell has signed on for a four-episode arc to help send Michael Scott off in the most hilarious way possible.

Ferrell will play an inappropriate (of course) branch manager, and will be acting alongside Carell in his last episodes, as well as one episode after Carell leaves.

The Office has been not-totally-awesome recently (or I just haven't been watching), but I will DEFINITELY be watching these episodes. Maybe they could invite Paul Rudd too?

Oregon Trail Days and Twitter

I don't know about everyone else, but back around second grade I was totally nuts over Oregon Trail. I used to go into my Dad's office sit in his super comfy chair, and get down on some serious covered wagon fun with me and whichever friend's of mine I thought should be going on such an important adventure with me. Sure it was tough, sometimes you have to shoot some bison, sometimes you're mom gets typhoid, but gosh was it a good time.

WELL GUESS WHAT!

Internet superpower Facebook has announced today that it will be releasing a version of Oregon Trail. Skeptical? Check out this video. It's mezmorizing and it makes me get that excited warm feeling like when you watch old episodes of Rugrats.

Pretty great huh? You can all be expecting an invite from me on Facebook to join in my covered wagon trek to Independence Rock. There's also a Carmen Sandiego game that's being released if that's anyone's thing.

PS. I know I'm 3 years late but I just started using Twitter. It's pretty awesome. (Our blog even has it!) My user name is jilllllll . Get on it!

If I were President

GOOD Magazine and 247 Townhall made the video series "If I were president" back in 2008. I found a few of them stalking George Watsky on youtube, he made one and his is ok. But I really like Mos Def's. My favorite parts of his campaign are the free breakfast for kids everywhere, and the 100 year ban on using the phrases "In the club", "droppin it like it's hot", and "shortie".

We Miss Heath Ledger

Today is the third anniversary of Heath Ledger's tragic death. It was a terrible day. Alice had to sit through an endless hair cut, while the hair dressers talked nonchalantly about his death. John watched Lords of Dogtown and drank every time Heath came on screen, which turned out to be impossible, frankly he's the star of the movie. John passed out halfway through. We wish he was still making great movies and looking totally babelicious.

Here are two of our favorite Heath moments. We couldn't include the entirety of Brokeback Mountain or his transformative performance in Lords of Dogtown, or his turn as William as Ulrich von Lichtenstien in A Knight's Tale. What is your favorite Heath moment?

Look Around You! - Water.

Want To Learn Everything You Didn't Know About Water?

This is an episode of an old British farce television show written by Robert Popper and Peter Serafinowicz (I don't know if those names have any significance to people, they certainly didn't to me); poking fun at old educational broadcasts.

Notice how his hand becomes increasingly burned and shaking. Also notice their use of portmanteau (the mixing of two words or phrases to make one word; chill + relax = chillax; jean + shorts = jorts; or in this case, thants and blants), and their use of pencils to point things out. They are a common themes throughout the whole show's running.

High Speed Photos

Quick history lesson, then some sweet photos.

In 1916, German Weapons Scientists developed high speed photography. Basically, the way they do it is for a few milliseconds, the film flowing through the film gate at several hundred frames per second is stopped to capture the image. I'm gonna guess the pictures that followed were taken by about 620 frames per second.

Honorable Mentions: (All done with bullets or sharp/hard things)

Sweet Balloon.

All involving water:

Winner:

By the way, pertaining to the breaking egg, I had always thought it was fact that you cant break an egg in your hand if it has no cracks (look it up). However, Mr. Kirby proved that wrong in 3 seconds, and I had egg on my face, literally, and the ceiling, so don't try it.

A giant drunken puppet

I've been meaning to write about Vulture, New York Magazine's daily entertainment section online, which has great stories and commentary on TV shows and pop culture, plus sweet scoops, see their Spiderman section. The specialize in funny slide shows with commentary at the side with all sorts of themes like 10 greatest rapper face tattoos and 8 greatest wrong lost theories or Blake Lively's Breast Looks (long, but entertaining).

Well now I have a worthy reason to tell you about Vulture, because today it brought me this. This video left me totally confused and bemused. I tried to do some research on it, but no one had anything to say other than the puppet's name is Arthur and he's in Ireland. I don't know how it is maneuvered. I don't know who made it. But here's the video, as provided by Vulture, and here's the article they had on it.

Anyone with info should forward them to Plus1Press,

LOL means kanye is joking

Kanye tweeted this, plus an "LOL" which erryone deleted before they wrote an article about it making it one of the most forgotten and important LOLs in 2011, after his new song with Jay-Z got bumped from the top of the itunes best seller list by Britney's new song.I appreciated when Kanye interrupted Taylor Swift on MTV, Beyonce's video is one of the best of all time, also it was the best part of the awards show and its great that he is joking about it now. Kanye is the only rock star left.

Also whys it gotta hurt so bad when a limb falls asleep then wakes back up?

Also did erryone hear about the fox that shot the hunter? thumbs are totes overrated.

Did your Sign Just Change?! (WTF)

I don't know if I'm ready to accept this, but I just read that some astronomists recalcuated the original Babylonian Zodiac taking into account slight shifts in earth's axis over the last millenia. Or something.

The dates are different and they reintroduced a 13th sign! So I guess I'm now a Taurus?:

Capricorn: Jan. 20-Feb. 16.
Aquarius: Feb. 16-March 11.

Pisces: March 11-April 18.

Aries: April 18-May 13.

Taurus: May 13-June 21.

Gemini: June 21-July 20.

Cancer: July 20-Aug. 10.

Leo: Aug. 10-Sept. 16.

Virgo: Sept. 16-Oct. 30.

Libra: Oct. 30-Nov. 23.

Scorpio: Nov. 23-29.

Ophiuchus:* Nov. 29-Dec. 17.

Sagittarius: Dec. 17-Jan. 20.

* Discarded by the Babylonians because they wanted 12 signs per year.

I found this video around Christmas, every once in a while you gotta watch news clips from the 60's. Its old and interesting, the clip doesn't mention The Shroud of Turin.

Also, erryone should go to ID's portfolio and "appreciate" all of her work by clicking on the different links and after checking them out click the button on the bottom of the page.

Red Box Success

While home for the holidays, I had my first red box encounters and lemme tell you, they were epically succesful. If you have't seen the following movies, get on it. The red box by cumby's at four corners in westford has all of them.

1. How to Train Your Dragon
2. Easy A (hysterical---especially her parents)
3. Scott Pilgrim vs the World

Also--saw Black Swan at $6 Tuesday in Lowell and it is STILL creeping me out. I somehow got a cut on one of my fingers that tore off a bit of skin and I flipped a little when I noticed it stinging.

There are so many good movies out and coming out soon--- thank goodness for pirated versions online. Movie cinemas are WAYYY overpriced in Vienna.

Homebrewed hair rinse

For whatever reason, I keep hearing about apple cider vinegar hair rinses. So when i found a brand new bottle of it in the cupboard, I decided to go for it. According to magazines and a random facebook friend, the mixture helps remove build up from styling products and conditioners, restores hair's natural pH (whatever that means) and adds shine and bounce at the same time. So I tested it myself, just for you!

I used the simplest recipe I could find, which was 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar distilled in 1qt water. After shampooing and rinsing with my regular shampoo, I poured the mixture over my head and smooshed it around. I let it rest for a minute or two and then rinsed it out with cold water, supposedly to seal the hair. No conditioner needed. But be warned, I got a little in my eye and damn, it stung.

For real, my hair is so shiny right now. And the smell of vinegar is gone now that my hair is dry. And if you're worried about the smell, a couple of recipes have herbal infusions or optional drops of essential oils like tea tree or lavender. Most of the recipes recommend using the mixture no more than once a week. I think I'll start doing it once a month.

Shweet Star Wars Stuff

When the first Star Wars movie was being made there was a chance it would be a flop. This proved to be wicked wrong, howevs just incase there was a novelization for a wicked low budget sequel written by the same guy who ghostwrote the first Star Wars novelization. The low budget sequel is named Splinter of the Mind's Eye and its worth a quick read of the plot overview.

Snakes on the Train!!

Snake as Boa. (This isn't really her but you get the idea)
Sorry for the double post but HOLD THE PHONE, THERE IS SOME CRAZY SHIT GOING DOWN IN BOSTON RIGHT NOW.

Some crazy lady was wearing her 3 ft pet snake around her neck (hidden under a scarf) on the Red Line yesterday morning, and she lost it.

MBTA officials stopped & searched the train she was on (causing delays in service) but never found the snake. Crazy lady then posted a wanted ad on Craigslist asking for the safe return of her pet.

"MBTA officials believe the trains are snake-free, and that passengers should not be concerned," spokesman Joe Pesaturo said. --> psha! How do they know?

I hope I haven't scarred anyone, and that we can all continue riding the Red Line in peace. -id

Bourdain in Boston

Promo image for Tony's Boston webcast
Anthony Bourdain is one of my favorites, so I was super excited when I heard he would be filming a Boston episode of his Travel Channel show No Reservations all this week.

Thankfully he also took over his show's Twitter account this week so I've been able to read Tony's personal account of his time in Boston. Bourdain is a native New Yorker, but he apparently loves Boston, especially Southie (shout out Ev & Meg!). Here are some of his more entertaining tweets:

"Grinder at Rondo's followed by Murphy's Law, L Street and the magnificent Quencher. I feel skull- fucked."
"After malpractice by "Dr. McGillicutty", Ruffino and I needed brain food. Belle Isle for seafood. Situation improved."
"Candlepin bowling in Southie. While getting hooted at by scores of Sox fans. Bad for the concentration. Outcome uncertain."

Tony also did a live webcast on Wednesday from the aforementioned Rondo's which was broadcasted on his Facebook account. He answered questions posted by fans, and the best was his response to the question "What's the best cure for a hangover?" to which Tony replied:

"Asprin, a joint, and spicy food. Oh and coke. Coca Cola."

Word. Can't wait to see the show!

Bad. Ass.

One of the greatest fight scenes, possibly all movie scenes, ever is from a Thai movie called The Protector (Tom-Yum-Goong).

This scene is filmed in all one shot, no cuts, no wires. Just stuntmen and a camera guy in great shape. It took them 8 times to film it, and only on the last try did they get it all right.
